Connect to a Server, shared folder, ftp, etc.
Simple way to Connect to Server and add a share or ftp ... also how to order, rename and remove them.
With Ubuntu it's really easy to connect to a windows share, FTP or custom location. It's very easy to permanently mount a custom location to Places Bookmarks and to browse files in Nautilus. The part I found harder to find information about was actually how to remove them from Places Bookmarks, or to order and rename them, although it's an extremely easy process, the info was harder to find online.
This article will cover:
- How to connect to server available in Places
- How to rename the share or fpt
- How to order those connections and bookmarks
- How to remove a permanent bookmark from Places and Nautilus file browser
The first step is to add a connection to server, that can be easily done by going to Places » Connect to Server...

The Connect to Server window will pop-up in order to choose the network location, the type of connection, the authentication and the bookmark name.
From the Service type: in a drop down box you can choose the the type of remote connection, frequently it's to a network share (drive or folder in a remote network computer). There's also available connections to FTP, Public FTP, SSH, WebDAV http, Secure WebDAV https and custom location. In this case, which I think makes 90% of the connect to server usage, we are going to connect to a windows share, folder in a remote network computer.
Server: You need to specify the address or domain name of the remote computer where the share or folder is located, the easiest way is to use the machine Ip. In many cases, small home networks, the computer name (domain name) is not properly set. So, the computer Ip will work just as well and if it's a static Ip, better yet.
Share and Folder: The share option let's you specify the share name inside a windows file and print server or a samba server acting as the same. But in this case we will keep it simple, just a folder in a remote network computer. So, the folder name in that computer is called sharefolder.
The User Name: Usually not necessary, if you are not running AD and domain server. In this small lan you just need to specify in the remote computer where the folder is at, to share and allow read/write access to everybody or all users/computers.
Domain Name: Again, in this case it's not necessary, but if the remote computer was a part of a domain, then you should specify it here, ie. mylan.local
Add Bookmark check mark and Bookmark name: I find this option really useful because it allows you to change the display name of the folder in Places»»Bookmarks or in Nautilus. You can actually write a name that is easier for you to recognize.

After these steps are done you can actually see the folders you have added in Places »»» Bookmarks or in Nautilus File Browser, in this example, all folders bellow "Pedro omireyfs01" are all shared network folder in several computers.

Now, the next steps are to order, rename and delete these permanent connections from Bookmarks and from Nautilus file browser. For that we need to launch Nautilus, easily done by clicking in Places »»» home folder

Now that you have launched Nautilus, you can see all the shared folders you previously added. You can also see that the icon of the folder will change if you are actually connected to it, in this case folder B1 and B6.

To ORDER the folders the way you like it to display in Nautilus and Places»»»Bookmarks, you just need to, in Nautilus, drag and drop the folder icon in the left side of the screen to the position you want it to be.
To REMANE OR REMOVE a folder, you simply right click on the desire folder, left side of the screen, and the option to rename or remove will pop up.
