comment: A technical school located in the North of Iceland "Akureyri" saves 5 million Kronas (€ 27,706.39 = US$ 39,375.0648) by changing the operating system of the school computers to open source Ubuntu. They also point the fact that it was an easy change without any need of extra hardware or additional costs. Also, they urge other public institutions to follow the example and save money in license fees in this time of world crisis.

All the best to you guys. You are in good Ubuntu hands. Hope more institutions follow this example of excellency.

  • Fat Pop Do Wop - Circumstances dictate change
From here in the UK (where Linux distro's are unknown to the majority of the population) the collapse of Icelandic financial institutions was big news until the British banking system went the same way. Now that Icelandic organizations have seen the savings to be made in FOSS and may indeed have been forced to change, isn't it amazing that the transition wasn't all that difficult? The hardest part of change is inside our heads BEFORE we actually do anything. Maybe now some British establishments will at last adopt some decent FOSS as the recession deepens . . .

Whatever the rest of the world does, it doesn't change minds in the UK, so there is slim to no hope that UK organizations in any significant number will follow Iceland or any elsewhere in adopting Open Source.

At a personal, I have received my Ubuntu Dell Latitude 2100, and I am impressed. Setup, including wifi and 3G phone tethering (Nokia N96) was so easy. I wish more people and institutions can give it ago. The more that do the faster it will improve.

    Well done.

It's so encouraging to see stories like this more and more often.

    Here's a (rough) translation:

The Technical School of Akureri under technology director Adam Óskarsson has started a six-month project to switch from buying Microsoft software (Windows and Office) to instead using open software like Linux and other free software. The first stage in this process is that the school has terminated the contract to use Microsoft Office software and is preparing to install OpenOffice.org in all the school's computers. This is an open office suite (?) that has all the same features as Microsoft Office but costs nothing. As a result, the instructors are getting a translation guide and putting together workbooks about the software so it can easily be used in instruction right away, in the Fall.
The school has already set up a website about using OpenOffice.org, which can be found at http://openoffice.is.

Savings of at least five million per year were easily obtained by using open software and older computers, which are too slow to run Windows. Similar savi...
